When You’re Praying for _________ … How to Trust God.

By Kate Horney

I’m sharing something with you today that I’ve only shared with a few of my closest friends…

But first, let me just tell you that Patrick and I have been so blessed by our son Jackson.  He truly is a gift from the Lord, and we have enjoyed and are still are enjoying every (sleepless, snotty) second of being his parents.

I can’t imagine my life without him and am so grateful the Lord gave us such a precious son.

But here’s an honest mom moment: we’ve been praying for baby #2.

And we’ve been praying for a while.  And at times, the waiting feels painful.

Have you been there?

Here’s the truth:  It’s not about the baby,  It’s a struggle in trusting God.

The Bible tells us that God is in control.  And you believe that, right?

He is in control of all things- including the birth of our children.  In the last few months, I have been looking back through Biblical history, and found quite a few examples of the Lord’s control over the conception of babies…

  • It was said of Hannah that “The Lord had closed her womb” (1 Samuel 1:5).
  • In Genesis 29:31 we read that “The Lord opened the womb of Leah”.
  • Sarah, Abraham’s wife said, “The Lord has kept me from having children” ( Genesis 16:2)
  • The angel of the Lord said to Samson’s mother before his birth, “You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son.” (Judges 13:3)
  • The angel of the Lord also told Zechariah, “Your prayer has been heard.  Your wife Elisabeth will bear you a son.” (Luke 1:13).

One of my favorite verses when we were expecting Jackson was Psalm 139:13, which says…

“God knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

The Lord not only controls if and when we bear children, but He even directs the formation of the little ones in our womb!   (How cool is THAT?!)

The Bible is filled with passages that teach us that it is the Lord who controls the conception of our children.

And there are many, many more that show his control over all other things as well.

Whatever you’re struggling with: THE LORD IS IN CONTROL.

But if the Lord is in control and if we know that, why do we struggle?  How can we trust Him in the midst of the pain and heartache of  __________?  (Enter your struggle here)

There are a couple of things that we must believe about the truth of who God is in order to trust Him:

  1. Believe God is completely sovereign.
  2. Believe God is perfect in love.
  3. Believe God is infinite in wisdom.

No matter what struggle you’re going through, the solution is always to trust God.

  • When you’re praying for a baby… Trust God.
  • When you’re in the midst of pain from a disease…. Trust God.
  • When a natural disaster hits… Trust God.

The answer is ALWAYS to trust God.

God does not willingly bring affliction or grief to us (Lamentations 3:31-33) and He does not delight in causing us pain or heartache.  We are His children!

And as His children, God wants the best for us.  We can trust Him when our hearts are aching because we know that He loves us.  He is perfect in love.  And He never wastes pain.

If you’re struggling, you need to ask yourself if you are truly trusting God.

When we trust the Lord, no matter what we’re going through, we can rest in the truth and the knowledge that His invite wisdom and perfect love have determined that this particular struggle is best for us.

This does not mean we can not pray for a baby, for healing from a disease, or for relief from a disaster.

We should absolutely pray for those things…

BUT we should pray in a TRUSTING way.

One realization that has helped me (and may help you) to pray in a trusting way is this…

Though God can do all things, for infinitely wise and loving reasons, he may not do that which we pray that He will do.

Pray.  And then accept God’s will.

Trust He is completely sovereign.  Find comfort in the truth that He perfect in love. And rest in the fact that He is infinite in wisdom.  He knows what is best for us!

  1. I LOVE this post, Kate. THanks for your transparency and being willing to share your struggles with the rest of us. I think when we do this as believers we take back some of the power that satan wants to steal from us. He wants us to feel alone, and afraid, and when we bring these things to light, the truth of God can shine on ANY issue. As other believers come along side and begin to pray for us, too, God is glorified and His purposes are accomplished. I love your sweet heart and your willingness to be obedient to our Father. Thank you.
